Kicad vs eagle

This is not a debate over free software. And heaven knows it’s not perfect. Only thing that sucks is the licensing model. But still beats Altium’s cost. Very cumbersome to propagate changes back and forth.

It’s fast, and it’s powerful. I’ve spent the last couple of days evaluating PCB design software. Circuit Studio has been eliminated because at $9it’s way, way too expensive for this hobbyist.

Mainly since, due their popularity and user base, they have do have Mac versions, unlike Altium and CircuitMaker. Online web-based versions should be fine if available but they’re not the same as having the program installed on your system. Inspired by Steve Chamberlin’s post evaluating kicad vs eagle for someone new to both, here are some more opinions from the perspective of someone who uses both equally, (about projects for both), but is certainly not an expert at either.

It feels to me like a step-change in the seriousness of the software. It has super functions like online positive and negative annotation function, batch command execution script file, copper cladding, and interactive follower. And EAGLE supports Windows, Linux, and Mac three platforms.

Besides, the library of this software is very rich, and scripts can be use and it comes with CAM tools. Both were hard to learn. Overall, with all factors considere the winner depends on the specific preferences of each individual user. My first project using kicad.
